Microsoft's Xbox 360 is rapidly closing in on the worldwide 25 million sold mark, according to word from the company this morning.

The system could have passed this key milestone by the end of the month, following reductions across the globe and assisted by the launch of key games and the now imminent New Xbox Experience.

"With the New Xbox Experience we will reach the next generation of Xbox owners, 25 million and beyond. We are at a watershed moment, backed by the largest entertainment brands, with an incredible line-up of entertainment unmatched in any industry," beams boss Don Mattrick.

While the Wii has sold 35 million systems, the PS3 17 million, Microsoft are rather proud of the 25 million mark within three years, the firm confidently predicting that they will outsell the PS3 over the whole generation.

The Wii, meanwhile, is stretching ahead, although initiatives like the New Xbox Experience and titles like You're in the Movies and Lips are supposed to help with this wee 'problem'. More soon.
